SUNDAY SCHOOL HAPPENINGS

Kids in Rainier Valley Heritage Parade: 219K

by Sarah Ortner, RE Teacher/Coordinator

Welcome to the Religious Education Program! I want to invite every single one of you to consider this aspect of church life and how it can enrich you, as well as how you can support it. Religious Education is a touchstone in the life of any congregation—it gives newcomers a reason to invest in the church, allows children and youth to be connected to the mission and purpose of religious life, and enables adult members to more deeply connect to the whole community.

This year, our Religious Education scholars have been studying Religions Around the World! Our RE scholars are exploring how different people in different places answer the big questions of their lives, how they celebrate and share and connect with one another, and what our religion has to learn from (and offer to) others. For next year we are looking at a curriculum that celebrates the web of life.

We're excited to announce that Tandi Rogers Koerger, Program Specialist for the Pacific Northwest District of the UUA, will help lead a special RE meeting on Sun, May 25 at 12:30 pm. Tandi will be consulting with us on various aspects of the RE program. Everyone with an interest in children’s or adult religious education is strongly encouraged to attend!

Our Whole Lives (OWL, the UUA’s series of human sexuality courses for various age groups) wrapped up in April with a celebration for the families. This course for kindergarteners through grade 2 was a powerful learning experience for all involved and we intend to offer a similar class for kids in grades 4–6 next year. If you would like to know more about OWL, please talk with Sarah.

SPECIAL FOR TEENS: RVUUC offers a youth group during the latter part of the service most Sunday mornings, led by Kristin Grace. When the elementary-age kids go downstairs to their classrooms, older youth are invited to join Kristin in the office for lively and meaningful activities and discussion.

COOPERATIVE NURSERY FOR INFANTS AND TODDLERS: For children ages 4 and younger, RVUUC provides toys and activities in the foyer during services and encourages cooperative care by parents. There is also a library area at the back of the sanctuary where you can sit with your restless toddler or baby but still hear the service. For more info talk with Sarah, Chris Rhinehart, Karen Crisalli-Winter, or Lisa Maynard.

If you would like to register your child for Sunday school, have questions about the program, or would like to help, please talk with Sarah on Sunday or email Sarah.
